Molybdenum is a heavy metal used for a variety of industrial processes, primarily as a corrosion-inhibiting pigment. The most common variation of the element, molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), is used as a primer coating in some industrial applications and a lubricant in others.
MoS2 is extracted from ore and then purified. The result is an industrial lubricant used in high-heat, industrial applications. According to the International Molybdenum Association (IMOA), MoS2 has: a lower friction coefficient that another common lubricant ore, graphite; bonds well to other metals; and allows for easy filming. The IMOA also notes the compound's stability with most solvents.

Molybdenum disulfide performs lubricating duties, along with various resins, in primer production. The combination is considered a slick, yet quick-drying, film lubricant coating that also performs certain corrosion-inhibiting tasks in various industrial and commercial applications.
MoS2 is particularly adept in highly pressurized or heated environments. Able to be exposed, once dry, to up to 300,000 lbs. per square inch of pressure, this primer lubricant is considered the best solid material to withstand the highest loads of industrial friction.
